Description
Medical students are trained in highly competitive environments where mistakes are often perceived as indicators of inadequate ability rather than opportunities for learning and growth. As a result, many learners demonstrate fixed-mindset characteristics, including avoidance of difficult challenges, reluctance to seek feedback, fear of failure, and decreased resilience following setbacks. These behaviors may adversely affect academic performance, professional identity formation, wellness, and long-term career development.
Evidence suggests that growth mindset, defined as the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort, effective strategies, and feedback, is associated with improved resilience, adaptability, learning behaviors, and academic success. Despite growing evidence supporting growth mindset principles in education, many medical student educators have not received formal training in applying these concepts within medical education. Consequently, a gap exists between current educational practices and best practices that preceptors in the LP program can use to foster lifelong learning, adaptability, psychological safety, and professional growth in the medical students they teach.
