The Longitudinal Preceptor (LP) program offers first- and second-year medical students a valuable opportunity to gain early, hands-on experience in clinical settings under the guidance of a dedicated clinician mentor. As students begin interacting with patients, developing strong communication skills becomes essential—not just for gathering clinical information, but for building trust, fostering therapeutic relationships, and ensuring patients understand their care.

Effective communication is a core clinical skill that directly impacts patient outcomes. It involves more than speaking clearly; it requires empathy, active listening, and the ability to tailor messages to diverse patient populations, including those with limited health literacy. Techniques such as the "teach-back" method are practical, evidence-based strategies that help ensure patients truly understand their diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow-up instructions.
